Systematics Powers, Rob [1]. Mating Studies and Molecular Phylogenies Reveal a Species Complex in Coprinellus disseminatus. Coprinellus disseminatus (”the fairy bonnet mushroom”) is a small saprotrophic mushroom-forming basidiomycete with a bipolar mating system. C. disseminatus has a worldwide distribution and is commonly found on rotting stumps and logs. Through the use of mating studies, I have indentified an intersterility group within C. disseminatus. Strains from East Asia and South America that are mating compatible with each other are intersterile with North American and European strains. Molecular phylogenies (using ITS, β-Tubulin and TEF1) all show strong support that the East Asian and South American strains form a separate clade from North American and European strains, suggesting that Coprinellus disseminatus should be viewed as a species complex.
